LET’S TALK ABOUT IT : TECHNOLOGY, TEENAGERS AND DEPRESSION

I have always been writing positively about technology but as we know its not all that rosy. The rise in use of smartphones and social media platforms in the recent years have also lead to a rise in suicide ,depression cases and generally how teenagers and young adults interact.

The radical rise of platforms like Facebook and Instagram have brought both joy and sadness to the world. It has created jobs, businesses and so many other good things but according to me, I think that the bad outweighs the good. Why would I say so?

A good example is that most people have their moods shift to negative often after visiting Facebook( https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/facebook-sad-happen-lie/ ). The change of mood is more often than not caused by envy and jealousy. Looking at others, especially our peers doing well in life makes us think that they have no failures in their lives.

Frequent use of social media will then further make one feel less of a being, with the fact that they are not doing as well as others out there. This is already depression. The truth is that no one has it easy. Everyone has challenges but most people tend not to show them.

Technology, in this case social media, has led to young people leading a false life, or even moreso go to great and extreme lengths to sustain a false lifestyle. Young ladies have decided to give in to demands of older men so as to sustain extreme lifestyles. Young men are also not left behind, they are doing the same.

I think that the youth should be sensitized on the effects of social media, and even probably a moderation on the use of such platforms. Let us promote reality, not fake lifestyles, weird challenges and modern prostitution. We are the future, let us mend it.

How best can we deal with this? Feel free to like, comment and share.

  1. Awesome,it’s difficult for most of youths to accept their lifestyle leading them to seek alternative means(easy way of making money). Social media!

  2. Nice piece.Having the understanding that technology is here to stay, we just need to go back to the basics of raising kids to be self sufficient and self confident. That way they wouldn’t be swayed by what they see on social media and will always be reminded to make their own happiness. We can also have champions like you who already have seen the source of the problem help fellow teenagers realise the harm and how to cope with the existing challenges.

  3. Technology has also led to online child sexual exploitation. Alot of minors who are in these social media platforms have met bad people who have lied to them and and taken advantage of them. We have heard of many cases of defilement and rape as a result of meeting someone online and trusting them and meeting them in funny places. It’s high time parents control the things and sites their children visit online.I can encourage parents to be digital and monitor what their young ones are doing online and guide them appropriatly.
